Bob Saks 2 New Dealerships

Bob Saks Automotive Group is investing over $15 million for two new dealerships off I-96 in Lyon Township.

January is the target date of completion of Bob Saks Buick-Pontiac-GMC while Bob Saks Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep will follow. We can probably expect a Buick catalytic converter in the soon to open store.

Analysts comment large new dealerships in high-traffic areas like the ones Mechigian is building are needed by Detroit's automakers to help recapture the U.S. consumer.

Kevin Mechigian, president of Bob Saks Automotive Group and son of company founder Robert Mechigian couldn't be happier about the investment.

The modern dealerships will be nearly 40,000 square feet each and will invade 15 acres from I-96 to Pontiac Trail, near its intersection with Milford Road.

Mechigian is confident in the busy intersection on the fast-growing western edge of wealthy Oakland County, which is a running suburban retail spot, with Wal-Mart, Starbucks, Lowe's and other stores. He said over 160,000 drivers pass the area every day on their way to the stores and other centers like Ann Arbor, Novi or Kensington Metropark.

Some rival dealers told media people they aren t happy about the addition of the two Bob Saks dealerships. But stores helped General Motors Corp. and Chrysler Group create many desirable mega-dealerships in Oakland County without increasing the stores in the domestic market.

It s because Bob Saks sold its Dodge franchise in Farmington Hills to Suburban Chrysler-Jeep in Novi and sold its Buick franchise to Sellers Pontiac-GMC in Farmington Hills. Bob Saks also had to buy the Fiegley Buick franchise in Milford.

Those acquisitions helped GM and Chrysler round out their Buick-Pontiac-GMC and Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep concept stores in the locality.

Michael Yatsko, Chrysler's director of dealer operations, said they did it in a way that they d keep the number of points the same.

Reducing dealerships is a major tactic for Detroit automakers, which collectively have over 15,000 dealerships nationwide. Experts say 20 percent to 70 percent of those stores should be eradicated so the remaining stores can be more profitable and invest in the new facilities and skillful employees needed to attract consumers back to Detroit's marques.

To accomplish that, one of the ways by which automakers have been working is through combining certain brands in one store, like Buick-Pontiac-GMC or Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep.

GM and Chrysler are working to streamline their product lineups for those brands so they re gathered under one roof, which could leave owners of just one or two of those brands competing.
