Basic Maintenance Of Your Yamaha R6 Fairing

The purpose of your Yamaha R6 fairing is to reduce the wind drag of the bike as it hurtles along the road. To accomplish this task, the fairing on your R6 has to be very aerodynamic. The more aerodynamic the fairing, the more steady the bike is during transit.

R6 fairings have taken many shapes over the years, with manufacturers building faster and faster bikes all the time. Not only are fairings aerodynamically important, but they often have aesthetic importance too.

That said the Yamaha fairing is a fragile piece of equipment, and needs to be treated with respect.

Tugging at the wrong part of your fairing can easily result in it cracking. R6 fairings are attached to the bike with a plethora of screws, bolts and clips. You need to find out how exactly your fairing is attached by using the manual instead of trial and error.

Often you ll find that your bike has side panels and lower fairing. The purpose of this is simply ease of access - it means that you don t have to strip down the entire bike to perform routine maintenance on the things behind the fairing.

Side panels are easy to remove and handle. Simply remember to check the attachment points and you ll be fine. The other parts of the fairing; front and lower are, on most bikes, fairly bulky and great care should be taken when handling.

Once the fairing has been removed, place the pieces delicately, flat on the floor, laid out on some fine cloth to minimize scratching and breakage. It is most common at this point for scratches to occur.

You may want to consider an add-on to your motorcycle to further protect your fairing. The add-ons I suggest are called crash mushrooms. Essentially they take the fall; should you crash your bike or drop is by accident.

Fairings are fragile, so even a slow speed drop can see the damage costs soar. Get a crack in an awkward place and it s often time to replace the part or seek professional care.

The minor things; small scratches and tiny cracks can usually be repaired at home. Use some touch up paint for filling out mild scratches and mix up some epoxy resin to deal with those small cracks.

These materials are generally available from any local hardware retailer and are as such an inexpensive solution when compared with others; such as replacement or repair.
